On May 29, more than 9,000 graduates from across all of Harvard University’s Schools gathered at Harvard Yard for the 374th Commencement Exercises.
The Class of 2025 marked a significant milestone as they processed into Tercentenary Theatre, surrounded by their families, friends, and supporters who filled the steps of Widener Library.
The atmosphere was vibrant as graduates proudly wore black gowns, some adorned with crimson accents. Many of them added personal touches with colorful stoles, while others turned their mortarboards into unique expressions of creativity and inspiration.
Messages such as “I Believe in Myself,” “Look at Me Go,” and “She Made It Happen” graced the caps, symbolizing the triumphs and hopes of the Class of 2025.
Students from the Harvard Kennedy School lightened the mood by tossing beach ball globes, and Harvard Law School students waved gavels, adding to the festive spirit.
A Message of Resilience and Character
Despite gray skies, the sun broke through as author and physician Abraham Verghese delivered the principal Commencement address in front of Memorial Church.
In his speech, Verghese emphasized the importance of making thoughtful decisions, especially under pressure. He reminded the graduates that their choices would not only reflect their character but also shape them in unexpected ways.
“Graduates, the decisions you make in the future when under pressure will say something about your character, while they will also shape and transform you in unexpected ways,” Verghese said. “Make your decisions worthy of those who supported, nurtured, and sacrificed for you: your parents, your partners, your family, your ancestors.”
Looking Toward the Future
The ceremony marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for the Class of 2025. With their Harvard degrees in hand, these graduates are now ready to take on new challenges and explore uncharted frontiers.
Whether they pursue careers in academia, government, healthcare, or other fields, they carry forward the values and lessons learned at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.
