Goodbye to Retirement at 67 - the new age for collecting Social Security changes everything in the United States

For many Americans, the thought of retirement often revolves around reaching the magical age of 65. However, the full retirement age (FRA) for Social Security benefits has been gradually increasing, and for those born in 1959, it will hit 66 years and 10 months starting in 2025.

While the change may seem small, it has important implications on how and when you can claim your benefits. Understanding how these changes affect your retirement strategy is key

to making the most of your Social Security benefits.

What Exactly Changed in Social Security’s Full Retirement Age?

The 1983 Social Security Amendments gradually pushed the FRA from 65 to 67, with a schedule to raise it in two-month increments. Those born in 1959 will see their FRA at 66 years and 10 months starting in 2025.

For individuals born in 1960 or later, the full retirement age will be 67. This change means that those who were expecting to retire at 66 years and 8 months (for the 1958 cohort) will now have to wait an additional two months.

For people who plan to retire earlier than their FRA, early filing at 62 results in a significant reduction of monthly benefits—about 29% for those born in 1959, and up to 30% for those born in 1960 or later.

However, delaying your Social Security claim past the FRA can result in an increase of up to 8% annually, capping at a 32% boost if you wait until age 70.

How to Bridge the Gap Between Early Retirement and Full Benefits

For those who wish to retire before reaching the full retirement age, there are a few strategies to make the transition smoother without relying on a full-time job:

  1. Phased Retirement: Consider negotiating a three- or four-day workweek. Working part-time, even as little as 15 hours a week, can help cover essential costs like health insurance and groceries without needing to dip into retirement savings.
  2. Cash Runway: It’s crucial to have a financial cushion to support you between retirement and full Social Security benefits. Financial experts recommend saving 18-24 months of living expenses in a high-yield savings account or money-market account. This can provide stability without the need to sell investments in a downturn.
  3. Monetize Extra Space: If you have extra space in your home or driveway, consider renting it out. Long-term room rentals can bring in $700–$1,000 a month, and driveway parking in busy urban areas can earn $150–$300.
  4. Bridge Jobs with Benefits: Some national retailers, such as Costco, Home Depot, and Trader Joe’s, offer part-time jobs that come with medical benefits for employees who work 20-28 hours a week. These jobs can provide you with some income and health insurance while waiting to reach your full retirement age.

Smart Withdrawal and Tax Strategies for Early Retirement

If you plan to retire early or bridge the gap before full Social Security benefits, there are tax-smart strategies to consider:

  1. Withdraw from Taxable Accounts: To avoid penalties and let retirement accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s continue growing, consider withdrawing from taxable brokerage accounts first.
  2. Roth IRA Withdrawals: Roth IRA contributions (not earnings) can be withdrawn tax- and penalty-free at any age. This provides a zero-tax option to access funds without affecting your tax situation.
  3. Keep Modified Adjusted Gross Income Low: Maintaining a low income during early retirement can help you qualify for Affordable Care Act subsidies, saving thousands on health insurance premiums until Medicare eligibility at 65.
  4. Side Income: If you need extra income, consider side gigs like tutoring online for $30–$50 an hour, pet sitting, or selling handmade crafts. These options allow you to earn money without committing to a full-time job.

Planning for Future Changes in Retirement Age

While the change from 65 to 67 is nearly complete, lawmakers are already debating the possibility of increasing the full retirement age to 68 or even 69 in the future.

While no new laws have passed yet, it’s a good idea to prepare for these potential changes by creating a flexible retirement plan. Having a cash reserve, part-time income, and tax-efficient withdrawal strategies will help buffer any future shifts in the Social Security system.

Retirement planning has never been more complex, and the gradual rise in the full retirement age is just one of the factors that require careful consideration.

Although the increase in retirement age to 67 may seem like a minor change, it highlights the importance of having a plan in place to navigate the shift.

Building a cash reserve, considering part-time work, and using smart tax strategies will allow you to retire when you’re ready, not when Social Security tells you to.

Keep in mind that flexibility is key, especially as lawmakers continue to debate further increases to the retirement age.

  1. The easiest way to fix social security is to take the cap off of earnings so the billionaires have to pay the same percentage that the rest of us do on our earnings. Changing the age is only moving the goal post which is not what he signed up for when we started paying into the system when we first started working. All the bureaucrats that want to change the age and make it more and more unattainable should be removed from office and forced into hard labor in prison for the rest of their natural life as far as I am concern.

  2. Republicans. Democrats. It doesn’t matter. They are all in the pockets of special interests. If anything gets done that benefits the average American citizen, it is incidental. They do not represent their constituents. They only represent themselves and the power that they wield. There should be term limits and age limits on every office in government: executive, legislative, and judicial. Every other developed Nation does a better job of providing quality of life: housing, health care, and nutrition than America. We just spend more with worse results.

Both have their issues, that said republicans repeatedly work to cut earned benefits like SS medicad and medicare and give tax cuts to corporations. Democrats consistently pull in the opposite direction. So IMO your both comment isnt really true when it comes to this topic.

  3. If this does not apply to the 3 branches of government, What’s the point ?
80+ years old politicians living out their retirement sleeping in the chair we pay for doing nothing but complaining they need more from us.
The democrats and Republicans are a tag team. When enough citizens get sick of the status quo they tap in the other side and onto government as usual for 200 + years and going strong.

Besides How will they be able to psychologically be able to program your children if we are allowing you to be at home with them to raise them. The world revolves around creating criminals for excuses to test out thier sadistic methods of control. They need young girls and boys rebellion to have easy access to our children how they feed them to the pedos, in which by the way is the majority of all our law makers around the world. Why they keep the public so distracted with clowns like Diddy so we do not see the agenda. We the poeple are under attack by our leaders and we the people are to damn dumb or blind or just do not care to see what is going on. I declair everyone should start growing their food indoors so they can not destroy them in order to start our process of enough is enough. We should be home schooling our children why it is important for both parents to be in the households. Takes two and unfortunately, the government has seen fit to disturb that as well. We have to take back our lives one prson at a time and when ther is no longer anything for them to control hen they will really show us whom they are. Then and only then will the world see what must be done before they destroy us all.

    • Raising the age of Social Security retirement is not about liberals or illegals or any woke bs. It’s about math. People are living much longer than they did when the age was set at 65. That means that the Social Security system is going to have to pay out a lot more money to support people for a lot more years. If you want the system to survive and to pay you anything, the delay in retirement age is essential.

I was about to return during the first Trump administration because work was plentiful and the economy was stable. Then came the Biden crime family and they destroyed the economy by allowing 20 million illegal immigrants into the country. Now I will just stay put and wait until President Trump has a few years to rectify the damage Marxists have done to the greatest nation on the planet.

But yet, SSI is supposedly to run out within a decade. I miss the America I grew up in, and am ashamed of what has become of this once great nation. Out sourcing, along with illegal immigrants should have never gotten this disgustingly out of hand. And for those who state that America was founded by immigrants , Big yes. But they also assimilated by becoming English speaking, patriotic Americans. Not like now days, where we are catering to the immigrants who hate Americans, but love our immigration benefits. After knowing what benefits are for immigrants, while I became disabled 30 yrs ago and been denied benefits. I can no longer be proud to be an American.

    • I’m sorry for your diagnosis. I don’t know of any family that hasn’t been affected by cancer, and that is sad. Unfortunately, I believe it is the greed of big companies knowingly using ingredients that are known carcinogens. Many other countries aren’t experiencing the same health issues. Gluten intolerance isn’t even an issue in Italy where they dine on mostly pasta and bread. Yet, our country has gluten, dairy, peanut, specific fruits and many other allergies that are life threatening. USA needs to do better. Unfortunately, don’t think I’ll see it in my lifetime. Peace be with.

The change to raise the Social Security Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) was voted on in 1983. Obviously, President Trump was not in office at that time. Do not blame the last handful of presidents for something that happened 40+ years ago! However, you can put the blame on those folks that have been in office since way back when (how decades were Biden, Pelosi, etc in Congressional office?). We definitely need age limits and term limits for all senior political officials.

    • How about this? Trump wants billionaires to pay a much lower percentage of income taxes than you. While they may pay more than any one of us in our lifetime, as a whole, we pay more. Why do they get to keep more of what they profit than any one of us? If they didn’t hoard their wealth, it could easily be redistributed to programs that are beneficial to us. Instead, they get a free pass to not contribute what they should to the rest of society, and they have the government at their disposal to change laws so they benefit them? It isn’t one party doing this either. Ever since Citizen’s United was passed, wealth inequality has become a much larger problem. That tends to happen when money is given a voice. It will always win against people that allow it, and it won’t do us any favors when it controls the lawmakers.

Biden gave millions of our SSI to illegals who didn’t pay in one red cent to a retirement. I on the other hand took a $600 pay cut. Why, because my heart was 100%blocked and I didn’t have 4-5 years to wait for disability to maybe be approved. So if you want a President to blame tell Biden to get our money back. He’s filthy rich. • As much as they’re taking out money from workers’ paychecks, Medicare will still take out $185/mo. from your monthly SS benefits when you retire. Depends on the company you work for, some companies when you leave, you can extend your health coverage for about a year or so (18 mos), but you’ll be under cobra which is very expensive.

Currently is monthly 185$ and is taken from your soc security check Prescription drugs are not covered and requjres a supplemental policy at one’s expense. There are many Medicare Advantage Insurances HMO that provide prescription coverage at no extra cost.

Republicans have also been responsible for most of our debt. The current administration is doing nothing but getting richer and they are flagrant about breaking our laws in doing so. Keep blaming the left, immigrants , and everyone who won’t bow to Trump if it makes watching America crumble easier for you, but your willingness to be brainwashed by far right media and your unjustified hatred of whoever your orange messiah tells you to hate may enable you to spend eternity with him and he is not spending it where true Christians do.

        • The retirement age has been 67 and 3/4 for several years now because I got a letter 10 years ago saying that is my retirement age

          • Yes it has, I took mine at 62 to take care of my husband and they said if I waited 5 years it would add about $100 a month to my amount. Not worth the wait, but they make this sound new and it isn’t. But I also agree that if people ( elected people, imagrants and such) that have never paid into it fo not collect it they could stop raising the age for those of us that have. That way we could enjoy our older years with some dignity.

      • Exactly they don’t care about us we put them in office but then they do what they want to do and they’re only worried about their benefits and what’s good for them. Most people that have her labor jobs we’re supposed to work into almost 70 years old to get $1,000 or slightly more? I’m 61 now I have a really hard job cleaning for a memory care facility and that’s really hard work cleaning up after dementia residence and it’s almost like 38 rooms a day I clean. I don’t know how I’m going to make it till I’m 67 I would like to retire at 62 and enjoy the rest of the year as I have left. But that’s not possible because they keep raising the age of retirement now it’s 70 years old if you want to make slightly over $1,000 if I retire at 62 I only get like $900 for the rest of my life what am I going to do with that when my rent $700 I’m going to live off of $200 and take care of myself and $200 after I pay my rent? It’s impossible they don’t care about people that have hard labor jobs because they sit on their butt and they make craploads of money!

Although it might be disappointing to many, this was not an overnight decision. The MRA has increased over the years for the reasons stated in the article.

          • During Bill Clinton’s presidency, the age was 65 when workers were entitled to 100 percent of Social Security benefits. It has gradually increased to 67 under changes to Social Security’s financial structure enacted by Congress in 1983.
Lay the blame where it belongs, in the Regan era congressional period.

          • By a dictator I’m assuming you mean trump. This has been a thing for years, it was a thing in the 80s…

          • Dictator?
I moved to a different country during the failed economic policies of the Barrack Hussein Obama years so I could afford to live on Social Security income.

          • Oh I don’t know why not think you might want to retire someday and put my back in starting a savings and maybe some investing. Oh I know no one told you to do that, and don’t say I couldn’t afford it because EVERYONE has at least 5.00 they waste on BS weather it’s cigarettes, beer, coffee. Instead of blowing money all of your life maybe you should’ve thought of your future and not think the government should take care of you. if you put back 5.00 a week in an interest bearing account and let it grow for 30 years. You wouldn’t be crying now.

        • You won’t get 900 for life every year they raises SS for everyone,do a part time job and get Your SS, go to Pantries,we need to learn to accommodate ourselves in this harsh environment, life will be more difficult in the coming years,no government is going to help us ,we got to learn to play the game.

        • Social security was never meant to cover 100% of post-retirement living costs. That’s what IRAs and 401Ks are for – and your ss should be a supplement to that. Unfortunately many people cannot afford day to day living plus pulling out money for retirement.
I wish you all the best.

They don’t budget it: I know, I lived too much of my life that way. I didn’t get it together until I was almost 50. I’m not blaming my slimmer future on the government! Not to say they’re doing anything right for the people who have worked hard and paid Caesar what belongs to Caesar and SS with the promise of getting it back plus interest!

People were expected to have savings like a 401K, or an employment pension as their main retirement income. If you did not save for your retirement years, SSN will never cover your living expenses as your only source of old age income.

          • The information at hand is not grammar. Social Security has enabled many of us to have some income when we can no longer work
It was neber intended to provide us with what we were earning
SS is a leg on a three-legged stool which cannot stand alone. We are required to come up with the othet two legs. What we receive is based on our earnings during our working years and unfortunately many of us have had minimal earnings which resulted in a low monthly amount. We cannot expect our government to support us 100% when we didnt.

I commend people like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger and others that gave up everything of their political careers for the country they loved. Then there are the others who care only about themselves and the rest of the billionaires. I hope they all burn in hell!

          • 100% agree. They don’t care about anyone unless they stand in the way of an election or point out the true wrong they are doing AND always get away with it. We can get a traffic ticket and if unpaid go straight to jail , they can murder people and destroy lives without any consequences. This isn’t a leading government it’s a dictatorship to all us citizens. It’s no longer (they work for us) it’s We work for them so they can continue to damage real Americans

But how is a person that doesn’t make a lot of money that works really really hard it hard labor job supposed to keep going until they’re 67 years old? I want to retire while I’m still able to get around and I can enjoy my golden mirrors not when I’m half dead and have to sit in the rocking chair the rest of my life I think they should lower the retirement age. Us older people who have been working all of our lives deserve to enjoy what years we have left here on Earth. Not have to work until we’re half dead and then what then we go to a nursing home after we get done working our entire lives or we’re not able to get around? That’s not any kind of a retirement.
